Asha, aka performer and cultural critique Pat Elle, has recently joined Bethany on the coach as a co-host for The Sassy Show's monthly episode on Islington Radio.
As friends who connected over their professional and personal lifestyles, Asha and Bethany credit their length phone calls and uncensored conversations for building a bridge between their two worlds. In this interview, Asha digs beneath the surface of Bethany's public media presence and asks questions that lead to vulnerable story sharing about matters of the heart, the body, and the family unit.
Taking a trip down memory lane leads Bethany to share the reasons to her becoming teetotal and the habits that both stunted and exposed her confidence levels. Reflecting on her school friendships and feeling the desire to be liked by everyone is something that shifted dramatically when Bethany attended Goldsmiths to study drama. An introduction to queer communities coincided with her behaviour of comparison. "I felt quite intimidated by the standard of people's abilties and talents." This and a feeling of misdirection resulted in Bethany leaving the course after a year, and pivoting to study art instead.
I felt quite intimidated by the standard of people's abilities and talent
This shift of direction is something that continued through Bethany's life until she was in her late twenties when she decided to pursue a self-honed career as a media producer and journalist. On the side of her work in these industries, Bethany also performs under the guise Bx Sassy - a sassy whirlwind of dialogue, dance, and kinky interactions.
When asked about regrets and what Bethany would tell her younger self, they share how an greater sense of confident autonomy is something they're forever aspire towards. "I'd want to say to that little girl, be louder, be silly, don't care what people think - which is so much harder sad than done". The desire to encourage others to be confident in their personality and presence is what led Bethany down a road of performing. It is on stage and behind the mic that Bethany uses her personality and love for music and dance to provoke more open-minded conversations regarding sexuality, gender, and bodily experiences. A thread of interest taht she recalls being fascinated by since a young teenager.
I'm so in awe of people who can express an opinion, be themselves, be raucous - I aspire to be that
The theme of confidence continues arising throughout Asha and Bethany's conversation. When discussing mutual experiences of navigating the creative industry, Bethany shares how her approach of "fake it till you make it" became the stepping stone for activating a career she dreamt of.
Don't be scared to say you are something before you're actually it - try things and you'll realise you can do it
Her advice for anyone wanting to change the course of their life or enter a project/new experience is to "say you are something before you're actually it". She explains how this self-identifying route allows space for action and opportunities to arrive. An example of this is Bethany's work as a visual journalist, telling us how "I picked up my phone and started taking pictures and recording conversations with people I asked to interview." Bethany would then publish features on her blog and share podcast episodes online. From a point of curiousity-led creativity, Bethany elevated her skills and became the journalist and media producer she is today.
Like anyone, Bethany still carries a bag full of doubt and fears. When asked about what scares her the most, her response is focused on relationships and love and the anxiety is brings. Expanding on this, Bethany explains how "being in a fulfilling polyamorous relationship and being in love scares me. Being committed to another human scares me". Being able to share this with co-host Asha leads then to discussing how to navigate vulnerability in intimacy and build healthy balance in partner relationships.
Being committed to another human scares me
Recognising how growth is an essential part of this leads Bethany to explain how her own experiences of past relationships have made it difficult to trust in the longevity of love. When analysing the regrets she holds onto regarding past behaviour, Bethany offers a personal anecdote of forgiveness being a crucial part of repairing broken hearts and open wounds.
It's with care and consideration that we witness Bethany's personal journey unfold. Be it on air, via an IG reel, or in her weekly newsletters, she is intent on opening up more space for conversaitons to be aired. Hoping that through collective sharing a more aware and nurtured form of communication can be carved - one where sassyness allows for the the most confident and the most sensitive parts to be seen, held and cared for.
